Yunnan changes character from the lakeside streets of Dali to Lijiang's old town and the mountains beyond. Erhai Lake, the Three Pagodas and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain give a sense of that variety in a relatively compact route.
Travel farther north for Tiger Leaping Gorge and the Tibetan-influenced town of Shangri-La, including Songzanlin Monastery. The distances are real, so choosing a few well-connected stops makes for a more rewarding journey than trying to see the whole province at once.
